Introduction

We are a voluntary organisation and all members are encouraged to leadwalks or other activities.

If you wish to lead any walk or activity and you have decided where youwant to go, make sure the trip is within the limits of your ability (distance, terrain, navigational complexities etc) and let the Activities Officer know.

If you have not previously led a Club activity or are not known to theActivities Officer, you will be asked about your experience and capabilities andprovided your activity is accepted for the program, it will be published inNBC’s Activities Program and Magazine. As part of this process you will be requiredto provide a description of the activity and / or complete an Activity Notification Form which can be downloaded from the Activity Forms page.

Preparation

When preparing for an activity you need to gather all relevantinformation needed, this may include but not limited to; maps, guide books, weather forecasts, fire ratings, tide charts, train/bus/ferry timetables, permits etc. andinformation provided in discussions with other bushwalkers or parks rangers.

If you intend crossing private land, you must obtain permission fromlandowners before doing so. The Club recommends that activities not be undertaken in areas where atotal fire ban is in place.

Depending on the nature of your activity, you may need to work outdistances and times required to intermediate points. Consider the need foralternative routes or exit points to cope with weather changes or delays due toillness, injury or slower-than-expected progress.

Consider what additional information you may need to give to those whocontact you about your activity. Such information might include details of anyspecial equipment, skills or experience needed; the availability of water, campsites and shelter; the expected weather conditions; or possible hazards.

When you pass on this information to prospective participants, tryand give an objective description of what can be expected and avoid the use ofsubjective terms such as ‘simple’ or ‘easy’. What is straightforward to you maywell be daunting and difficult to others.

As Leader, you will also need to assess the ability of intendingparticipants in completing the activity. You are under no obligation to acceptanyone for your activity whom you consider unsuitable. If you need to rejectsomeone who has expressed an interest in your activity, it helps if you cansuggest an alternative trip from the Walks Program.

Temporary membersare welcome on Club trips but should be advised that they will be asked to readand sign a waiver and pay the participation fee. Without proof of adequateexperience, it is recommended that you reject temporary members on an activity known to belong or rough.

Before Departure

Before you leave for an overnight or wilderness activity, check the latest weather forecast and fire rating. It is recommended that you have leave a completed Activity Notification Form with aresponsible person & emailed it to nbcsafety@gmail.com.

The club’s Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) must becarried on remote and wilderness trips. It can be collected from the Activity Officer.

Starting Off Shaiya private servers.

Make sure that everyone who has registered interest in the activity has arrivedand is aware of what is planned. You should explain the route to be taken andwhat might be encountered, in particular any identified risks such as slipperyconditions, strong currents, difficult access or exposed areas. Go through the“Safety Check” on the Waiver Form and answer any questions posed by members ofthe party.

Make sure that everyone is introduced to each other and that people withfirst aid qualifications are identified as well as those carrying first aidkits and the PLB.

Everyone must complete the ActivityWaiver & Safety Checklist form. Do not commence untileveryone is ready and check soon after leaving that everyone is present, appointa ‘back marker’ if necessary.

Make frequent checks to see that no one is left behind, especially afterstops or in difficult conditions. Be constantly alert for any hazards and changing conditions you may encounterand bring them to the attention of the party members. Keep an eye on theweather, adjusting your plans if necessary. Pace your progress havingsufficient breaks to meet the needs of the weakest members of the group and monitoryour progress against your plan making any adjustments necessary to ensurecompletion.

At The End Of The Activity

Make sure that all participants have returned. Arrange for drivers to bereimbursed for their transport costs, park entry fees etc. Remember to contactyour “contact person(s)” as soon aspossible after you return. Advise the Activity Officer of any concerns or ofany incident on the trip that led to injury or threatened the safety of theparty and forward on the completed ActivityWaiver & Safety Checklist form. Ensure you have filled in the top section, signed and dated it. It may be scanned and emailed to nbcwalks@gmail.com, mailed to PO Box 554 Charlestown or handed to a committee member at a club meeting.

Dealing With Problems

Leaders occasionally encounter problems on the activities, though seriousproblems are very rare. In dealing with any problem that may arise, do not beafraid to ask for help from other members of the party. In any emergency theparty’s food and equipment should become communal.

It’s not so bad it’s good. This means war imdb. It’s so bad it’s nothing else but bad.

The most common problem you are likely to face is that of “group spread, caused by faster partymembers moving ahead or slower members lagging behind. It is critical thatparticipants do not become widely scatteredfor their own safety as well as the safety of the group. This must be made clear to all participants prior to starting.

This may mean that the party travels atthe pace of its slowest member. If you do allow faster members of the party togo on ahead, make sure that they clearly understand waiting places and times areagreed, so the party can regroup.

Ensure everybody knows what the plan is, such aswhere you intend to have lunch or camp. In heavy scrub, bad weather or otherdifficult conditions, make sure the party keeps together and in contact particularly during canoeing activities. Informparticipants to adopt the 'Buddy System' where each person is responsible for the personimmediately closest to them, and and if contact is lost, inform the leader immediately.

Being Unsure of Your Location

If you are unsure of your location, the first question to ask yourselfis does it really matter’?

In most cases you will still be able to get yourself to a known pointand complete your activity without difficulty. For instance, you may be able toretrace your steps until you can re-orientate yourself, climb to higher groundand take bearings to known points or head towards a ‘collecting feature’, suchas a ridge, track or watercourse, that will take you to where you want to go.

Discuss options with experienced members of your party and take actionbased on a systematic elimination of possibilities. Keep the party together. The convention of ‘if lost wait until rescued’ generally only applies if youare ‘truly lost’ or you are unable to move because of risk to thesafety of the party. In this case, you should set up camp in a prominent spotthat has access to water and use whatever aids you can to maximise yourvisibility.

Separation of a Party Member

Should someone become separated from the party, shout Cooeeor Fish-O or use a whistle to try and re-establish contact.

Check back to where the person was last seen with the party. Investigatelikely wrong routes. Try and imagine what the separated person would do andrespond accordingly. It is generally not desirable to split the party to searchfor the separated person. If the separated person has not beenfound within two hours, you should contact a Club Officer and decide ifexternal assistance is required from Police, National Parks and WildlifeService or Bushwalkers Wilderness Rescue Service. If apprehension exists about the missing walker/sthe police must be notified. The NPWS or BWRS will notify the police inthese circumstances. Your response may depend on the person and yourknowledge of their skills.

If you become separated fromthe party you should remain at that location. Do not leave that location, and stay calm.

Bad Weather and Fire

If bad weather is forecast or changes for the worst at the start of youractivity, consider cancelling the activity. If the Fire rating for the area is Extreme or Catastrophic then the activity MUST be cancelled. Should you decide to proceed, makesure that all participants are properly equipped for the conditions and that noone feels pressured into taking part. If bad weather or fires occur during an activity, you should consider shortening, modifying or abandoning it. Pay particularattention to signs of distress in the party.

An Unplanned Night Out

If your party suffers a prolonged delay, it may be better to spend acontrolled night in the bush rather than risk trying to get back to the cars inthe dark. If considering this option, remember that your first responsibilityis to yourself and your party rather than to anxious relatives and friends.Stop early enough to find a suitable spot. Make use of available shelter andkeep warm and dry as best you can and share available food and equipment.

Injury Or Illness On A Trip

If an injury or illness occurs on your activity, it is important thatyou act early.

The need to look after the casualty and ensure the safety of othermembers of the party overrides any planned objectives. Do not rely on themedical condition improving. In cases of heat stress, exhaustion orhypothermia, assume that you and others in the party may be nearing the samestate. Make use of the first aid skills and resources available to the party andtreat the casualty. Regularly monitor and record details of the casualty’scondition and of any first aid that you administer.

Depending on the circumstances, it may be appropriate to shorten orrearrange the trip to lighten the casualty’s pack by distributing its contents;or to split the party to retrieve a vehicle or get help.

Assess the situation and if necessary activate the PLB particularly inthe event of any life threatening situation such as snake bite, suspected heartattack etc. In the case of air evacuation of a casualty attract attention to your location by using the smoke flare.
